Across the Pre-cordillera mountain range we reach the immensity of the Puna highlands with snow capped volcanoes, salt lakes and bewildering landscapes.

With the last sunlight we arrive at Tolar Grande at 3,520 m above sea level.

On our today’s expedition into the high Andean mountain range we will cross Arizaro salt lake and climb up to abandoned railway stations and sulfur mines for breathtaking panoramic views with the “lord of the Andes”, the majestic Llullaillaco volcano towering of the scenery.

The mysterious “Cono de Arita” markes the southern end of Arizaro salt lake and from here volcanic high plains and serpentine mountain roads lead to Antofalla salt lake, that extends for more than 150 km like a giant white snake embedded between the rugged mountains and silent volcanoes.

Late in the afternoon we reach the fertile oasis of Antofagasta de la Sierra.

Embedded between amazing volcanic cones and sand dunes we explore the pumice field, locally known as the “Campo de Piedra Pómez”.

Formed by boiling hot volcanic ashes the surreal environment was sculptured by wind and weather into capricious figures and silhouettes and allows a look into the book of Andean volcanisme and geology.

The 35 km wide Galan caldera was only recently recognized as such, thanks to satellite images. It is now known as one of the largest collapsed calderas in the world, with the beautiful Laguna Diamante in its interior.

The nearby Laguna Grande is habitat for an abundant aquatic birdlife, including the Andean Flamingos; and especially during their summer breeding season.

We leave the Puna behind and reach Cafayate in the fertile Calchaquies Valleys at 1,700 m above sea level and in the heart of the most important wine production area of the Northwest.
