Hidden Towns in the Mountains
After crossing a 4000mts high checkpoint in a serpentine mountain road that crosses rivers without bridges, a small town in the valley near the river starts to be visible: Iruya.
聽Located in the province of Salta, northwestern Argentina
This scenic town once was the economical trading point of excellence for the native communities in the region.
Iruya was officially founded in 1753, but the first inhabitants settled here around 100 years earlier. They were mainly aboriginals of which the oldest roots go back to the Ocloyas, a people belonging to the ethnic group of the Kolla who stem from the Ollasuyo, which used to be one of the four regions of the Inca empire.
Deeper into the mountains at 8 km north of Iruya there is the small village of聽 San Isidro, 7 km north there is the village of San Juan, and 6 km south there is the village of Pueblo Viejo. All worthy of a visit for their authenticity and because its only available to reach them by聽 medium to moderate treks in one of the most spectacular scenery of the northwest, since its mountains, covered in various colored rocks , according to the time of the day the light that they reflect changes from pink to violet and to green on a sunny day!
