The Calchaquí Valley is a breathtaking area in the Northwest region of Argentina conformed by the provinces of Jujuy, Salta, Tucumán and Catamarca characterized for its diverse geography with different climates.
From desserts to rain-forests this Andean valley was once populated by different local ethnic communities (like the Calchaquíes and Quilmes among others) whom interacted with the Inca Empire in a scenery of spectacular geographic formations.
Located 90km southwest of the city of Salta, one of the highlight destinations is the Natural reserve of Quebrada de las Conchas (Gorge of the Shells) having a tremendous archaeological value, is characterized by the amount of sea shell fossils studded into the enormous rock walls which are possible to spot in a regular trek or bike ride.
LOS CARDONES NATIONAL PARK
Within Cachi and San Carlos departments this protected area portrays the emblematic landscape conformed by the Cardones cacti and the fossil remains in the hills and ravines at the height levels between 2,700 m and 5,000 m.
