THE LAKE REGION
The snow topped mountains and volcanos offer majestic vistas that contrast with the deep valleys, dazzling lakes and dense Patagonian forests that comprise this region. The Andes mountain range separates the humid forests of the Valdivia region of Chile from the arid and windy Patagonian steppes in Argentina, producing spectacular landscapes in the process.
On the hillsides of these volcanic peaks and on the lake coasts there are myrtle, larch, araucaria and pehuene forests containing some specimens over 3000 years old. These eco-systems, as well as a number of endangered species which inhabit them, such as the huemul, the condor, the puma and the pudú – the smallest member of the deer family – are protected by a chain of National Parks extending along the mountain range.
The region offers a wide variety of activities which include unlimited possibilities for trekking, mountain climbing, scenic hikes, sailing, kayaking, fishing, horseback riding, cycling, playing golf, skiing and a wide variety of winter activities, all accompanied by an exquisite local cuisine and excellent wines.
Trekking through the forests, crossing the steppes, sitting at a lake shore or climbing a mountain…the Lake District invites travelers to take a deep breath and soak in the majestic nature surrounding them.
