El Calafate

The Lake and Glacier Region

The Southern Patagonian Ice Field is the largest continental ice field in the world after Antarctica and Greenland and is the birthplace of hundreds of glaciers in Argentina and Chile.

In Los Glaciares National Park, the ice rests on enormous lakes created by glaciers, nestled between turquoise waters and thick Andean Patagonian forests. Owls, eagles, hawks, woodpeckers, parrots, swans, flamingos and the majestic flight of the Andean condor are all delights for the eye to see.

Perito Moreno, Spegazzini, Upsala and Viedma are the most impressive and the most photographed glaciers but there are others that reveal themselves to those willing to find them.

Close to El Chaltén, Cerro Fitz Roy raises its granite walls to a height of 3375 meters, secreting away unspoiled lakes and landscapes. The beauty and variety of the trails around the area has given El Chalten a big name among trekkers.

All around the lakes, the vast Patagonian steppe stretches out towards the horizon. Large llamas, foxes and pumas live there alongside the traditional ranches of huge extensions. Some have opened their doors to tourism while continuing to raise cattle, offering horseback excursions and authentic life-in-the-countryside experiences.

HIGHLIGHTS

PERITO MORENO GLACIER

The Perito Moreno Glacier, just an hour away from El Calafate, is without a doubt the most distinguished of the approximately 300 glaciers in the National Park.
The river of ice advances onto Argentino Lake, ending in a 5 kilometers wide and 50-70 meters high ice cliff.
The catwalks and various boat excursions allow tourists to observe the front wall of the glacier from up close and from diverse heights and perspectives.
Visitors can also walk on the glacier! When traversing the white behemoth, lagoons, waterfalls and deep, infinitely blue crevasses unfold.

ARGENTINO LAKE

The third biggest lake in South America covers 1560 km2 and is a peculiar shade of turquoise. Famous glaciers like Perito Moreno, Spegazzini and Upsala can be found on its shores.
Boating excursions offer different routes and different service levels, ranging from one hour tours in front of the Perito Moreno to 2 day cruises, sleeping on the lake and visiting all its interesting spots.
Navigations can be combined with land-based activities or visits to Estancia Cristina –only accessible by water- or even short treks to explore the glaciers and landscapes immersed in the Andean Patagonian forest.

EL CHALTÉN

This small mountain town, located at the foot of the Fitz Roy massif, is known the world over for its excellent trekking conditions.
El Chaltén invites you to walk through the forest listening to the birds and enjoying the pure, cold air blowing in your face. The numerous paths lead to breathtaking panoramic views or to lost lagoons of clear waters surrounded by monumental granite walls and crowned by glaciers and snowy peaks.
The trails have good signage and range in difficulty from easy 2 hour walks to demanding full day treks.

RECOMMENDED

GLACIARIUM

The Ice Museum helps understand the glaciers you’ll be seeing on the trip. The exhibition is well presented, entertaining and dynamic.

THE ICE BAR

A crazy experience! Temperatures are below zero and the tables, benches and walls are made of ice. One bar is next to Glaciarium and the other in downtown El Calafate.

LA TAPERA

A cozy restaurant with the best cuisine in El Chaltén.
